Laura Marling at Field Day 2008

Copyright Ian Miller ianmilleruk.com

I spent last night listening to some of Laura Marling’s new songs and it made me think back to these photos I took of her at Field Day in Victoria Park a number of years back. It was near the start of a day where the rain lashed down. More images in this set that I took from the sound desk show her performing to a sea of umbrellas. There are also images that show her backing musicians which includes some chap called Marcus Mumford.

This photo best reflects that original record of hers though; just Laura the singer-songwriter playing some of her own music. On the off chance you’ve not encountered that record or any of her follow ups, I seriously suggest you grab a copy and listen.

Ian McCulloch performs with Echo & The Bunnymen

A festival shot timed perfectly with a stunning summers sunset, which I made use of by shooting from the opposite side from where it struck Ian McCulloch’s face. The resulting image is one that I love, showered in the smoke from the cigarette he’d just puffed and with a contour pulled out from the surrounding blackness. It was as effortlessly cool as the band themselves.

Chris Shiflett (Foo Fighters)

This photo originated from half hour spent with Chris Shiflett – who’s most known as the lead guitarist in the band Foo Fighters.

Chris was fitting in a small UK tour with his side project Jackson United whilst in the middle of a busy summer jaunting with the Foos. We met in the dressing room at the Camden Barfly where his band were playing later that night. We chatted about various things – Jackson United, Foos, the surf in Cornwall – as part of an arranged interview. I explained the graffiti on the walls, saying that artists who play the Barfly leave their mark on the walls. He borrowed my Sharpie and proceeded to sign and doodle on a gap on the wall where we were, I documented the moment.

A photo that was never planned of a moment that was never planned.

Battle at Leeds festival

Battle are a band that will undoubtedly feature numerous times in my archive photo posts due to the number of times I was lucky enough to have access to photograph them.

This is a shot of Jason and Tim exiting the stage after their set at Reading Festival in 2007. The story of the day that led up to this photo is something that I jotted down in detail for Play magazine – an article that was never published due to Sound Control entering administration. I will eventually refer back to my work and publish it here with more images from my weekend with them.

The Maccabees guitarist Felix White @ Underage Festival 2008

Here’s a great portrait of The Maccabees’ guitarist Felix White performing at the 2008 Underage Festival in Victoria Park. A great event for younger music fans who want to experience live music festivals in safety – so strict and well adhered to were the rules that I required a chaperone to venture outside the backstage compound and into the main arena. Was a great day of role reversal for me and was one of the best atmospheres at a festival I can recall. I covered the day for Clash magazine.

My Top Ten Movies of 2012

Without reasons and minimal descriptions (because you’ve heard everything you need to about these films a thousand times already), here’s a list of my top ten movies released in the UK during 2012. The choices are likely to change on the letterboxd.com page in time as I see more movies, but this is how it stands at the end of those twelve months.
